Technology and community

May 10th, 2009

Till a few decades ago, most people would be free after work and would spend their time socialising with neighbour and participating in community activities.  However, with the availability of appliance like television , computers and the internet , the amount of person to person interaction has decreased a lot.  This is especially true in urban  areas, where most people are tired after work and just want to relax by watching TV.  In many localities, people do not know their neighbours.

Instead of meeting someone in person,  many younger people prefer to make friends online as it offers a certain amount of anonymity.  A lot of people fake their identity online, pretending to be some one different.  This could be the reason why social networking websites have become very popular in recent years.
